As students of music we embark upon a new journey of self discovery and learning. Each students' journey begins and ends in their own unique place. No two students share the exact same journey. For those of us that dedicate our lives to musical arts, this journey is a life long process. As a private teacher, my goal is to set each student on a path to reaching their immediate and long term goals. My job as a private teacher is to seek out the strengths in my students and use these strengths as tools on the musical journey. I know that not every student is going to be a classical musician. My goal is to teach musical skills and love of music that will last a lifetime.
My teaching philosophy is to provide each student with a well rounded music education that combines a good foundation of basics. Every time a student comes to a lesson we are task oriented and I expect the student to show progress from the previous week. I observe learning patterns and adjust my lesson plans according to the way the student learns best. Sight reading is incorporated into lessons on a regular basis along with music history and music theory. Open and frequent communication about lessons with students and parents is encouraged.
My experience in vocal music encompasses classical, opera, folk, jazz and choral styles and performance practices. My instrumental experience not only includes 20 years of piano but also 15 years of instrumental experience on saxophone in concert band and jazz band. In singing, I am a firm believer that all singers need to develop healthy and solid vocal techniques in breathing, body awareness and efficient singing. Finding the students' true and natural voice is always my main objective. My goal in working with piano students is to give them a solid, basic foundation. I work hard to find music that they enjoy playing week after week. As a teacher and student of the bel canto style of singing I have a very deep interest in connecting the body, mind and spirit to the singing voice. I am currently working on incorporating yoga and other relaxation techniques to my own singing and teaching. I believe in introducing all of my students to many genres of music. This provides opportunities for personal and musical growth on all levels. In many instances students discover new worlds full of endless possibilities that enrich their musical experiences.
I provide two student recitals per year (Spring & Fall). We also participate in many NATS, MTNA, ACDA & MENC sponsored performances and auditions during the year. Many of my students are active performers and many of my former students are currently working on their own careers in music and performing. I encourage all of my students to participate in and observe other performing opportunities in and their communities. Korn Studio students will also have opportunities to perform for community service projects throughout the year.
